The Big Issue

Overview

When I first moved to Melbourne it was for a temporary backfill role as Art Director of The Big Issue magazine. In my time there I worked with an amazing team of people that put out a publication every fortnight that directly helps people experiencing homelessness. Their motto, 'A hand up, not a hand out'.

Responsibilities

Working with The Big Issue editorial team to:

  • Develop typography, colour palette and visual design
  • Design and Art Direction of the publication
  • Create illustration assets
  • Manage proofing, colour correction and printing processes
The Big Issue magazine is a fortnightly, independent magazine sold on the streets by people experiencing homelessness, marginalisation and disadvantage.”

On reflection

It was extremely rewarding to hold one of these magazines in your hand every two weeks knowing that The Big Issue vendors were out on the streets of Australia selling it to people the next day. The genuine sense of community and the conversations I had with people experiencing homelessness changed my perspective forever.
